MILLER, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- Group looking to try to eliminate property taxes in the state of South Dakota announced they have now submitted their amendment to the LRC(Legislative Research Council) in hopes of getting it to the Attorney General’s Office. They have been making stops all across South Dakota to promote their amendment.
Former State Senator Julie Frye-Mueller talks about what they looking to replace property taxes with a Transaction Tax.
Her husband Mike Mueller explains how this new tax would replace property taxes use to fund counties.
Another one pushing to eliminate property taxes is podcaster Matt Smith:
Smith talks about the purpose of this amendment.
Smith discuss the potential benefit of this amendment.
Smith explain how they determine the $1.50 Transaction Tax.
Smith feels if the amendment is voted on by the people, this will prevent legislators from touching these funds.
Reminder, the state don’t receive any money from property taxes, they go directly to the counties.
Back in 2024, IM28 which dealt with the repeal of the consumption tax, was challenged because of concerns that could lead to a state income tax. Mike Mueller addressed whether this amendment could lead to a state income tax.
Julie Frye-Mueller took the time to address funding that goes to public schools and the impact in the state.
Julie also addressed the plans to determine the Transaction Tax on a yearly basis.
Julie also talks about the possibility of a Joint Resolution from the South Dakota Legislature to place it on the ballot that way but expressed concerns that the legislature will turn their backs on South Dakota voters.
Reminder she was censured by the South Dakota Senate in 2023 over harassing statement made to a legislative staffer.
These seminars have in part been organized through the South Dakota GOP and GOP leadership in individual counties.
Chairman Jim Eschenbaum talks about that and emphasize that they will offer no official stances at this time.
