Lavanda Jean Lenling was born on August 14, 1934, to Waldemar and Margaret (Pigors) Lenling in Ferney, South Dakota. She was baptized at West Hansen Church, where the foundation of her lifelong faith began. She graduated from Groton High School in 1952 and earned her teaching certificate shortly after. In 1956, she married Alan Clemensen, and together they made their home on a farm near Conde, South Dakota. There, they raised three children: Roger, Renee, and Caron.
In 1978, Lavanda and her family moved to Aberdeen, where she became a dental assistant for Dr. James W. Anderson and then Dr. H. Ray Duncan. In retirement, Lavanda found joy in baking, tending to her vibrant flower garden, taking walks, playing cards with friends, and spending precious time with her children and grandchildren. Lavanda was a dedicated volunteer at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, and the Boys and Girls Club booth at the Brown County Fair.
