Recap of Day 2 of Comprehensive Property Tax Task Force

ABERDEEN, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- Wednesday was the second day of the Comprehensive Property Tax Force held at Northern State University in Aberdeen.

Session began with more public testimony addressing property taxes.

Another Aberdeen resident brought up the issue whether how nice a property look should impact what their tax rate should be.

Another resident and former South Dakota legislator Paul Dennert express no sympathy to those who has higher property taxes based on their location especially suberbs of both Rapid City & Sioux Falls.

Dennert also address possible amendment to replace property tax with the transaction tax.

Brown County Commisioner Mike Wiese talks about how SB216 impact counties.

Brown County Director of Equalization, Gene Loeschke(Les-Key) compare values from the past compared to today.

One topic of focus on Wednesday was the issues of TIFs for the city or county.  Representative Glen Vilhauer of Watertown talks about the importance of them in city government.

Representative Julie Auch of Centerville addressed TIFs and talks about how beneficial they really have been to the county or city.

Auch remarked which locations benefit most from TIFs.

Toward the end of the meeting, Senator Randy Deibert of Spearfish suggests at the next meeting he would like to see the committee start working on proposals to consider for next year’s session.

No date is set for the next meeting to address property taxes.
