PIERRE, S.D.(KCCR)- The Capitol Complex Beautification and Restoration Commission has approved a Department of Game, Fish and Parks plan to turn Capitol Lake in Pierre into a family fishing destination. Game, Fish and Parks Secretary Kevin Robling says Governor Larry Rhoden brought the idea to him a few months ago.
Robling says fishing would be permitted under the plan only on specific parts of the lake.
The east side of the peninsula is the deepest part of Capitol Lake following dredging a few years ago meaning fish would tend to congregate there. Capitol Lake would be stocked with bass, bluegill, perch and catfish. Robling says the lake could support more fish.
Fishing would be prohibited from the memorials on the lake. Fishing would be from shore only. Officials hope to have signage in place to open Capitol Lake to fishing this fall.
