SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (WNAX) – Record flooding is still underway on many rivers in eastern and southern South Dakota. That followed storms that dropped anywhere from 3-11  inches of rain over much of that area.

Mike Gillispie, a hydrologist at the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, says it is a part of a stubborn trend.

Gillispie says there are a number of reasons for the excessive runoff.

Gillispie says it looks like the wet ground conditions will carry over into next year.

The extended forecasts into early October now call for above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation.
