PIERRE, S.D.(SDBA)- A Senate resolution urging limited government involvement in economic development narrowly failed on the Senate floor Thursday.
Senate Concurrent Resolution 601 called for state policies that avoid tax incentives and subsidies and instead rely on market forces to guide growth.
Sponsor Senator John Carley said economic development has drifted away from its original purpose.
“Our people don’t need handouts. They need the government to stay in its lane and do its job.”
The non-binding resolution failed on a 17–16 vote. Carley entered notice of reconsideration, meaning the measure could return for another vote later in the legislative session.
