BROOKINGS, S.D.(KBRK)- It was a tight budget for state lawmakers — who earlier this year gave schools, healthcare providers and state employees a 1.4 percent cost of living increase.
SD Lt. Gov. Tony Venhuizen said much of that is the federal government’s fault.
To improve the budget in future years, he said South Dakota needs more economic development — like the recent expansions in Brookings at Bel Brands and Solventum.
Venhuizen urged caution about bringing data centers to South Dakota.
Gov. Larry Rhoden did sign a bill this session (Senate Bill 135) requiring data centers to cover the increased utility costs associated with their electric usage.
