Leonard Lipp was born on December 15, 1937, to Joseph and Helen (Materi) Lipp in Hague, North Dakota, on the Buechler farm near Rice Lake. In 1950, he moved with his family to Wetonka, South Dakota, where his family farmed.

In 1955, Leonard’s father, Joe, passed away from lung cancer. Shortly after, Leonard was drafted into the United States Army. In 1963, he moved to Aberdeen, SD, where he started working for Hub City as a machinist. In 1968, Leonard married Marie Schwingler in Hosmer, SD. To this union, three children were born: Leon, Jamie, and Lori. He continued working for Hub City for 40 years, until his retirement. They continued to make Aberdeen their lifelong home.

Leonard enjoyed fishing, hunting, pitching horseshoes, and playing card games. He has won many awards at many different tournaments. Lenny was a hard worker and a great promoter of horseshoes. He was an officer in the local and state Horseshoe Organizations. He attended tournaments in Minnesota, North & South Dakota. In 1998, Lenny was inducted into the South Dakota Horseshoe Hall of Fame.
