Larry Hearnen, 77

Mass of Christian Burial for Larry Hearnen, 77, of Conde, will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 16, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Turton. Burial with military honors will follow at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton. Lunch will be served following the burial at the Conde Community Center.

Visitation will be held at the church on Monday from 5–7 p.m., with a wake service at 7:00 p.m.

Larry peacefully passed away on June 7, 2026, at Edgewood Prairie Crossing in Sioux Falls.

Larry John Hearnen was born on April 18, 1949, in Huron to Tom and Betty (Schneider) Hearnen. He attended school in Conde, graduating in 1967. Larry continued his education at Northern State College until he was drafted in 1968. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 1970.

After his time in the military Larry attended Nettleton Business School for a short time before returning to Conde and working as a bank examiner. On April 5, 1975, he married Marlene Worlie at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Aberdeen. Together they were blessed with two daughters, Michelle and Steph. Larry enjoyed staying busy. He farmed with his brothers and together they also owned and operated Hearnen Brothers Trucking, while also serving as a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Post Office for over 40 years.

Larry was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Turton and the Conde American Legion. Always wanting to be surrounded by others, he was an active member of the community and enjoyed many hobbies, including fishing, playing cards, mowing, hunting, tractor pulling, and even tried Cruiser Car racing. In retirement, Larry and Marlene enjoyed spending several winters in Arizona.

Celebrating his life are his wife of 51 years, Marlene; his daughters, Michelle (Chad) Stemper of Hartford and Steph (Mike) DeJong of Victoria, MN; four grandchildren, Annie and Cameron Stemper, and Tenley and Lennon DeJong; and two sisters-in-law, Marilyn Hearnen of Peoria, Arizona, and Laurel Hearnen of Conde. Larry also cherished time with his extended family, including his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He always had a big smile and snuggle for his grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers, Jerry and Barry “Babe” Hearnen.

Casket bearers will be Kelly Hearnen, Ryan Hearnen, Kody Hearnen, Wyatt Hearnen, Todd Grandpre, Troy Grandpre, Drew Worlie, and Brandon Davis.

Honorary casket bearers will be Harvey Remily, Darell Kahla, Merlin Worlie, Bill Hearnen, Gary Hearnen, Steve Grandpre, Bob Hearnen, Cody Evans, Scott Vogel, and the entire “Card Crew.”
