Declaration of Independence reading held in Pierre on Wednesday

PIERRE, S.D.(KCCR)- Across all 50 states and U-S territories Wednesday night, a simultaneous reading of the Declaration of Independence took place in celebration of America’s 250th birthday last weekend.  South Dakota’s reading was held in the State Capitol Senate Chambers in Pierre.

State Historical Society Director Dr. Ben Jones introduced the 15 minute presentation streamed live on South Dakota Public Broadcasting.  Moments later Governor Larry Rhoden recited the most famous lines of the document.

Among those taking part in the reading were the Boys and Girls State Governors Coltyn Raymond and Quynn Nielson.

Among the others sharing in the recitation were Attorney General Marty Jackley, House Speaker Jon Hanson and the Presidents of South Dakota and Dakota State Universities and the University of South Dakota.
