CANTON, S.D. (WNAX) – The 2019 report card for South Dakota schools shows, overall, 54 percent of students in grades three through eight and high school juniors were proficient in reading and writing, 47 percent were proficient in math and only 40 percent made the grade in science.
Senator Jim Bolin of Canton says student performance depends on much more than just school hours.
Bolin says schools and teachers have a limited impact on students.
Bolin, a member of the Education Committee and a former teacher, says parents and the community have to be more involved.
Bolin says the report card will be a major issue for the 2020 legislature.
