BROOKINGS, S.D.(KBRK)- Ribbon-cutting was held Saturday to dedicate a new piece of public art at SDSU.

The sculpture honors researcher Edgar McFadden who developed a type of disease-resistant wheat in the 1920s.

SDSU President Barry Dunn said with that strain of wheat — named “Hope” — McFadden helped feed the world.

Governor Larry Rhoden said SDSU researchers continue to change the world.

The 24-foot tall statue depicts stalks of wheat intertwined like a D-N-A molecule.

The November general election is two months away.

Speaking on the campus of S-D-S-U this weekend, Gov. Larry Rhoden said after the June primary, he wanted to give voters a break.

He said the state Republican party is coming together following this summer’s fractious, four-way primary.

Rhoden also said he’s pleased with the reception his property tax bill is receiving.

The new law gives counties the option to lower residential property taxes by increasing local sales taxes. So far — Brown, Meade, Pennington, Codington and Custer counties have begun the process of implementing that program locally.
