South Dakota DSS seek request to ban soda from the SNAP program

PIERRE, S.D.(Hub City Radio)- The South Dakota Department of Social Service’s SNAP Division has submitted a request looking to prohibit soda from the SNAP program.  Soft drinks are defined as nonalcholic beverages that contain natural and artificial sweeteners.  The request exclude milk, soy and similar milk alternatives and 100% juices approved by the South Dakota Department of Health for the WIC(Women, Infants, Children) programs.

The primary goal is to improve the nutritional quality of SNAP purchases by reducing the use of benefits for
nutrient-poor, high-sugar beverages and encouraging healthier beverage choices

They hope to implement six months after gaining FNA(Food and Nutrition Administration) approval.

SDSU will serve as the evaluation partner.

There are around 800 SNAP-authorized retailers in South Dakota.
