Mathern sentenced in Redfield hospital incident

REDFIELD, S.D. (HubCityRadio.com) – Matthew J. Mathern, 31, of Redfield, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on charges related to a lock down at Community Memorial Hospital Avera in Redfield in June of 2018.

Mathern pleaded guilty in December of felony burglary and aggravated assault. He was sentenced to 10 years on each charge and to two years in prison on bond violation. All of the sentences will be served concurrently.

On the morning of June 25, Mathern entered the hospital armed with a handgun. He eventually led officials on a chase that reached speeds of 125 miles per hour.

It was reported that Mathern had an AK-47 rife and two 30-round clips in his vehicle.

No one was injured during the incident.
