PIERRE, S.D. (KCCR) – The Pierre School District has nearly completed retrofitting all of the District’s drinking water fountains with secondary filtration systems following the City of Pierre’s issuing of a Drinking Water Advisory last month. Superintendent Dr. Kelly Glodt says upon hearing about the Advisory issued due to the manganese content in the water the District took immediate action.
Glodt says the District has nearly finished the emergency retrofit.
The City of Pierre issued the Drinking Water Advisory on March 27 at the recommendation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Manganese is not currently regulated by EPA, but the agency is putting a new emphasis on manganese in drinking water. The Advisory cautions residents to avoid drinking city tap water unless filtered through a properly working secondary filtration system.
