ABERDEEN, S.D. (Press Release) – After 60 years of horse racing in Aberdeen, Northeast Area Horse Racing (NAHR) will not be conducting a live race meet in 2019 according to acting General Manager Bubby Haar. The non-profit organization that has operated and managed the live horse racing meet for the past 23 years has stated that they are unable to meet the recent changes of a bond requirement put in place by the South Dakota Gaming Commission.
The NAHR board is very disappointed that there will be no live horse racing in Aberdeen in 2019. However, they remain “Optimistic” that there will be a new revenue source to support South Dakota’s horse racing industry in the future.
NAHR staff and management would like to thank all of the businesses and sponsors from Aberdeen and surrounding communities, we could have never done it without your support. NAHR would like to show our appreciation to all of the Legislative Representatives both local and throughout the state of South Dakota who sponsored and supported HB 1251 and SB 128 at the recent Legislative session. NAHR also want to recognize our partnership with the Brown County Commissioners both past and present and the great staff in place at the Brown County Fairgrounds for all of their help each year along with our staff who worked the teller and concession lines, as well as the help every year from the Aberdeen American Legion. NAHR would like to say “Thank You” to all the fans who showed up each and every year to support the live meet, the horse racing industry, and the horsemen and women of South Dakota. You are all greatly appreciated.
