‘Born alive’ bill awaiting Noem’s signature

PIERRE, S.D.(Argus Leader)- A bill requiring doctors who deliver babies born after failed abortion attempts to give them the same care they would any other baby is one step from becoming law.

The South Dakota Senate voted 32-3 Tuesday to pass House Bill 1051, sending it to the governor’s office where it awaits Gov. Kristi Noem’s signature.

Proponents of the bill say its purpose is to protect all children born in South Dakota, while opponents worry it could be harmful to mothers and would interfere with patient-doctor relationships. They also say it wouldn’t bring about the change the bill’s sponsors say it would.
