South Dakota saw increase number of fatalities on the roads in 2020

PIERRE, S.D.(WNAX)- South Dakota highway fatalities last year were 38% higher than 2019.  141  people died in 132 crashes last year. The 2019 total of 102 fatalities was the lowest number since records started in 1947.

Amanda Hossle, Director of the Office of Highway Safety, says there were a few common factors.

Hossle says they will continue their public education programs.

Hossle says the emphasis will again be on using seat belts.

Hossle says they are concerned about increasing accidents as more people and vehicles return to the road as the pandemic wanes.
