Yankton getting ordiance ready for medical marijuana

YANKTON, S.D.(WNAX)- The Yankton City Commission had another work session Monday night refining an ordinance controlling the sales of medical marijuana.

City Attorney Ross Den Herder outlined how a person will get a medical marijuana prescription.

Den Herder says the city’s role will be setting guidelines for dispensary’s to operate legally.

Den Herder says the ordinance would limit the number of medical marijuana providers at the beginning.

The commission took no action at the work session. A proposed ordinance would be introduced at a future meeting.

The state Health Department has just asked for proposals for a patient registry, verification, and licensing system. The new law takes effect on July first.
