SD Appropriations Committee approve letter to delay applying for federal grants for state education

PIERRE, S.D.(WNAX)- The interim Appropriations Committee of the South Dakota legislature has approved a letter to the state Education Department, asking them to delay applying for federal grants dealing with American history or civics education until the full legislature can weigh in.

Senator Ryan Maher of Isabel says they need time to review the details of the federal program.

Representative Tina Mulally of Rapid City agreed with the delay.

Representative Linda Duba of Sioux Falls says the committee is overstepping its authority.

The motion to send the letter passed on a sixteen to one vote.
