WATERTOWN, S.D. (KXLG) – South Dakota Senator John Thune says, even though the conclusions by the Mueller investigation stated there was no collusion in the 2016 trump campaign, the question of obstruction will most likely continue to be debated and discussed.

Senator Thune also responded to another finding in the report wherein Mueller said, although President Trump didn’t commit a crime, that the special Counsel could still not exonerate him from obstruction of Justice. Mueller added that obstruction charges may have been filed against the president had Trump’s staff followed the President’s orders.

Senator Thune said the release of the report will settle the issue for most, but not all.

He expects Democrats in Congress will keep impeachment talks alive, but that they do it at their own peril. He recalled a time when he was in the House and impeachment proceedings were brought against then President Clinton. He says President Clinton’s numbers went up and Congress’s numbers went down.

Senator Thune’s remarks were made in Watertown Thursday where he was attending a Rotary event.
