Housing Needs Study Committee held their meeting this week in Rapid City

RAPID CITY, S.D.(WNAX)- The interim Housing Needs Study Committee held its second meeting Wednesday in Rapid City.  District 24 Representative Mike Weisgram of Fort Pierre is serving on the Committee and says infrastructure continues to surface as a concern to affordable housing.

Former legislator David Lust testified about the Rapid City Strategic Housing Trust Fund and how it could be one solution the Committee is looking for.

Wiegram says Lust’s program is the kind of innovative thinking the Committee is looking for.

Committee Chairman, Representative Roger Chase of Huron, says they wanted to hear about west river housing issues.

Chase says the issues are pretty much the same across the state.

Chase says they are also hearing about some possible housing solutions.

The committee also heard about housing concerns around Ellsworth Air Force Base and from home builders who say housing costs could be lowered by constructors looking into building codes and possibly using less expensive materials that still fit proper building codes.

Chase says they will hold their next meeting August fifth in Sioux Falls.
