VERMILLION, S.D. (WNAX) – Members of the legislatures Government Operations and Audit Committee will hear about the free speech policy at the University of South Dakota.
A Hawaiian themed party gone wrong at the law school triggered the appearance before lawmakers.
Senator Art Rusch of Vermillion says they want an update of how the situation evolved.
Administrators moved to change the theme of the party from Hawaiian to winter to avoid any offense. Students then complained their free speech rights were violated.
Rusch says the legislature supports that interpretation.
Rusch says the Board of Regents and the universities worked through the free speech policy last year.
USD President Sheila Gestring is scheduled to appear before the committee.
