PIERRE, S.D.(WNAX)- The Joint Committee on Appropriations of the South Dakota legislature has issued a letter of intent effectively banning K through 12 schools and the state’s universities from applying for federal grants related to civics or history education.
Committee Co-Chair, Representative Chris Karr of Sioux Falls says the committee can express an opinion.
Senator Reynold Nesiba of Sioux Falls says the letter goes in a dangerous direction.
Karr says legislators can lay out expectations too.
The letter says schools or education agencies should not pursue grants until after the 2022 legislative session has a chance to weigh in.
