Preview of today’s Redistricting Committee meeting

PIERRE, S.D.(DRGNews & WNAX)- The South Dakota Legislature’s House and Senate Legislative Redistricting Committees spent three days on the road last week taking public input on what the state’s new legislative districts should look like.

Following several days of public meetings last week, House and Senate members split on the maps they favor.

Senate Redistricting Committee chair Sen. Mary Duvall of Pierre says more than 200 people attended the seven listening sessions. She says about half provided public comments.

Duvall says a handful of different maps have brought to the redistricting committees.

Duvall says unless you live in Lawrence County, the boundaries of your legislative district are going to have to change.

House Committee member, Representative Ryan Cwach of Yankton, says he isn’t sure where they are going.

Cwach says they have to start looking at a compromise.

Cwach says the goal should be logical, workable districts.

The Senate Legislative Redistricting Committee and the House Legislative Redistricting Committee are holding their fifth meeting this afternoon at 2:30pm CT. The meeting is being conducted via electronic conference and in Room 414 of the State Capitol in Pierre to allow for both remote and in-person participation.
