PIERRE, S.D.(KCCR)- For victims of crimes, keeping up with the progress of where their case is and more importantly where the offender is can be a difficult path to navigate.  The South Dakota SAVIN system is available to help not only crime victims keep track of court cases close to them, but anyone with an interest in the case.

SAVIN stands for Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification system and program coordinator Deed Kinniburgh says SAVIN acts as the mailbox for court information.

A small number of smaller jails don’t submit information due to cost issues.  Kinnniburgh says while the system is good, it’s not perfect.

But those instances are used to improve the process.

Kinniburgh says enrolling on SAVIN is easy and free.

The SAVIN system first started in South Dakota in July of 2016
