PIERRE, S.D. (KCCR) – The Pierre City Commission has put repairs to the roof of the Pierre Municipal Building on the fast track. The rainy spring weather has caused numerous leaks in the roof impacting both the City of Pierre offices on the first level, but to the second story tenant Eagle Creek Software Services. City Engineer John Childs says most of the damage was the result of strong winds.
Childs says there two options for replacement, a mechanically attached roof or a ballasted roof where a membrane is secured with rock ballast. He also asked the Commission to declare the repairs and emergency.
Commissioner Jamie Huizenga says the roof has been an issue for some time.
The Pierre City Commission approved a bid by Chase Roofing of Pierre for a ballasted roofing system for $76,430. While the ballasted system is the more expensive system, it was also recommended through consultation. Under State Law, the city can bypass the normal bidding process by declaring an emergency so the repair work can begin sooner.
