PIERRE, S.D. (WNAX) – The South Dakota Senate debated and defeated a resolution Monday that called for a public vote on a constitutional amendment allowing one gaming license in Yankton.

Senator Justin Cronin of Gettysburg was one of the sponsors.

Senator Craig Kennedy of Yankton says his community is working to ensure a growing economic base.

Senator Troy Heinert of Mission says he can’t support the resolution because of the damage it could cause to tribal casinos.

The resolution was rejected on a 22 to 13 vote.

Gaming backers have said they would consider a state-wide petition drive to put the issue on the 2020 ballot.
