Sturgis City Council Considers Lifting Open Container Ban for Wrestling Tournament

KBHB Radio (STURGIS, S.D.):  A public hearing has been set for July 1st to discuss a controversial decision to allow open containers at an upcoming youth wrestling event at Harley Davidson Rally Point in Sturgis.

The city council earlier this month approved lifting the city’s open container ban for the Rumble at the Rally Point on July 12th.

That decision didn’t sit well with some, who worry that having an open container at an event meant solely for kids could lead to trouble. Sturgis City Manager Daniel Ainslie says that wasn’t the council’s intent.

Initially, the council approved the open container allowance from 4:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. that day.  At the July 1st hearing, the council will consider shortening that time period to between 4:30 and 6:00 p.m., which is during the event’s free barbecue dinner, when no wrestling is taking place.

The wrestling event will feature wrestlers from youth up to high school age.
