SD PUC approve study for Northwestern Energy

PIERRE, S.D.(WNAX)- Northwestern Energy was in front of the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission Tuesday asking permission to move ahead with a study for a possible nuclear powered electric generating facility.

Jeff Decker with Northwestern said they could qualify for federal funding.

Decker says the study would help them make a final decision.

Decker says the study is driven by their concern over the possible shutdown of major coal fired power plants.

PUC Chair Kristie Fiegen said the study is a first step.

Decker said they are looking at two possible locations for the plant that could cost over a billion dollars.

The Commission unanimously approved the study.
