ABERDEEN, SD (HubCityRadio.com) – On Tuesday’s edition of “The Sports Hub” it was a jam packed show with local notes, aplenty. First, the manager for the Aberdeen Smittys, Brandon Kusler dropped by the studio to talk about the last week that was.
The Smittys are currently on a three game winning streak, but before that began, they battled one the toughest teams in the state in Brookings last week. The Hardhats of Post 22 (Rapid City) beat Aberdeen 7-5, but Coach Kusler said the squad took a lot of positive notes from that game.
Getting back to Post 22, Coach Kusler says it’d be nice to get to that level where that sort of winning culture continues to roll over from year to year (for the Smittys). He says, they’re in the process of getting it started.
After they fell to Brookings last week, the Smittys got back to their winning style; dominating Jamestown 17-7 on Friday night. Coach Kusler loves the way this team responds when they fall short.
A lot of the Smittys wins this year have been very one sided blowouts; Kusler appreciates that his squad can win tight nit games, too. Even when they’re dealing with adversity when one of their key cogs goes down with an injury.
In game two, it was a one sided affair, winning 13-1. But, Kusler says it was a hustle play that really propelled the team forward to make the game non-competitive.
In the second half of “The Hub” Tukes brought in the Head Coach of the Aberdeen Swim Club, Neil Romney. He’s currently in his second year at the helm; he reflects on year one.
The “High Point Swim Meet” is this upcoming weekend and there are several summer teams where this might be the highlight of the year, but Romney says this has been a long time in preparation for this weekend and weekends’ to come.
When it comes to the swimmers who have high and lofty goals for the year and going forward, Coach Romney says the athletes who are ‘seeking mastery’ require the ‘daily diligence’.
Looking ahead to this weekend, Coach Romney gives the listeners a few athletes who we should keep an eye and ear out for.
The weekend’s events will be held at the Aberdeen Aquatic Center & Romney gives us an idea of what to look forward to, with some individual events.
