ABERDEEN, SD (HubCityRadio.com) – On “The Sports Hub” on Fox Sports Aberdeen on Tuesday, a former Aberdeen Roncalli & South Dakota State University alum, Dalton Cox, visited the program to walk down memory lane about his time in the Hub City & Brookings.
Wearing the green and golf for Aberdeen Roncalli, Cox was a multi-sport athlete (football, wrestling & basketball); he says Coach (Terry) Dosch and others really helped him become the athlete that would yield D1 results.
When reminiscing as a Cavalier, he says it wasn’t a game, or a play or stretch of accomplishments he remembers the most, but time spent with his teammates and his friends.
From Aberdeen, Cox was recruited to play Division 1 football for South Dakota State University. More often than not, D1 freshman ‘redshirt’ their first year, Cox was no different. He worked his way to the scout team MVP as a freshman, to the special teams player of the year in his redshirt freshman campaign. In today’s ‘transfer portal’ era, it’s not so much the standard for a player to put in a lot of (for lack of a better term) grunt work to become a starting position player. Cox says, while that ‘standard’ may be going away, it can still be done.
While playing division one football was great, Cox says everything began in the classroom; you have to stay away from being on ‘the list.’
This last year, SDSU hoisted the national championship after defeating NDSU 45-21. He watched the game down in Texas a proud alum; even though he wasn’t on the field, Coach Stiegelmeier says all the alumni had their finger prints on that national championship crown.
In the front half of the Hub, Tukes was joined in studio by Phillip Zens of the Aberdeen Smittys. He engineered a 1-0 shut out against Yankton Post 12; on the hill, Zens struck out seven and only surrendered one hit. He also provided the only RBI in the game, too. Zens reflects on his performance on the hill.
Not only has he had a great season on the diamond, but Zens also put together a stellar season & career with the Aberdeen Roncalli Cavalier football team. Zens said this last year playing under Head Coach Billy Young was a blast.
Back to the diamond, when things are getting dicey from the pitching perspective, Zens says it’s all about getting ahead of hitters.
The Smittys return to action on Wednesday (6/21) to take on the Post 15 East Legion squad at 3/5p for a doubleheader from Fossum Field.
