PIERRE, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- This week, teachers from all across the state of South Dakota embark on a road trips across South Dakota to learn history of the state.

South Dakota Secretary of Education Joe Graves talks how these road trips came about.

One of the stops on the east river trip is stop at Laura Ingalls Wilder’s home near DeSmet.

Another stop will be in Aberdeen at Dacotah Prairie Museum & Storybook Land.

Graves also talks about the upcoming website that teachers can use when the new social studies curriculum goes into effect in 2025.

In the past, most students weren’t taught the history of South Dakota until the fourth grade.  Graves believe that students can be taught South Dakota’s history at a younger age.

Graves believes it’s important to be taught diversity in the state.  One of the east river stops will be near Sisseton to learn Native American history.

About 240 teachers made the trips, half for the east river & half for the west river and will last for the entire week.
