PIERRE, S.D. (WNAX) – The South Dakota Legislature’s Interim Committee on Industrial Hemp held its first meeting in Pierre last week. South Dakota Farm Bureau Lobbyist Mike Held says committee members reported on their discussions with the state of Kentucky about their hemp program.
He says the main market for industrial hemp in Kentucky is with CBD oil, which is also the potential market for South Dakota should lawmakers approve it.
Held says there are hurdles in South Dakota and nationally to overcome in order to be able to sell CBD products.
Held says it would take a change in South Dakota state law as well as movement by the FDA to be able to use CBD oil as a potential market for industrial hemp. He says he’ll sharing information from the committee with the state’s county farm bureau Presidents who will then develop a policy for their organization on hemp.
