A bill to require legislative redistricting to be a joint committee heads to the House floor

PIERRE, S.D.(KJJQ)- A bill that would require legislative redistricting to be handled by a joint committee of house and senate lawmakers easily clears House State Affairs Wednesday morning.

Each chamber produced their own map last year, nearly leading to a deadlock.

House Bill 1007 is the work of District Four Representative Fred Deutsch of Florence. He says last year’s process did not go well.

Deutsch says he wants this to be the legislature’s bill and he welcomes input.

House Speaker Spencer Gosch supports the measure.

The measure passed 11-1 and now moves to the House floor.
