GROTON, SD (HubCityRadio.com) – The Aberdeen Smittys picked up a doubleheader sweep against the Groton Post 39 squad on Friday night in Groton. In game one, the Smittys picked up a 16-2 win & then a 14-2 victory in five innings, in game two.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Charlie Phillips picked up the victory on the hill; he went six innings of solid work and only surrendered three hits & struck out a pair and surrendered two runs (neither of them were earned). The Smittys offense cranked out 10 hits and three of them came from Casey Vining. He was 3-4 at the plate with a pair of singles and a triple + he drove in four. Cooper Eisenbeisz was 2-3 with a pair of runs scored & three runs driven in. Jaxon Ladner also drove in a pair & scored twice. Aberdeen also got RBI’s from Zane Backous, Phillip Zens (2), Lance Siefken, Talan Dutenhoeffer & Drew Salfrank.

In game two, the Smittys would only need five innings to earn the sweep of the day, winning 14-2. Offensively, the Smittys put up a three spot in the top of the first & added five runs in each the third & fourth innings. Jackson Welke earned the win on the rubber, pitching four innings and scattering five hits & only allowing one earned run and also striking out one. Once again, it was a stellar game for the offense & also Casey Vining. He went 2-3 at the dish with four runs driven in. Jaxon Ladner was 2-4 with a run scored + 3RBI. Groton’s defense struggled, with four errors in the field and Aberdeen took advantage of the miscues in the victory.

LAKE NORDEN, SD (HubCityRadio.com) – Sometimes it’s not how you start, but how you finish.

The Aberdeen Smittys downed the Lake Norden squad 8-4 on Saturday afternoon and went a perfect 3-0 on the weekend (after sweeping Groton Post 39) on Friday. The Smittys trailed 2-0 after the first inning, but would eventually tie things up at two after the fourth inning. Lake Norden led 4-2 going into the 6th inning, but Aberdeen put up three in the top of the eighth inning and added two more for insurance in the top of the ninth, for the win.

Offensively, the day belonged to Drew Salfrank at the dish. He went a perfect 4-4 with a pair of runs scored & also drove in four; he had two doubles & a pair of singles. Casey Vining went 1-2 with an RBI double, too.

From the mound, Jaxon Ladner went five innings and scattered five hits and surrendered a pair of runs, both earned. In relief, Joran Foss struck out four batters over three and two thirds innings of work and didn’t surrender any runs. The Smittys return to the diamond on Monday as they take on Sioux Falls Post 15 for a twinbill, at 3/5p in Sioux Falls.
