Aberdeen City Council extend moratorium on data centers

ABERDEEN, S.D.(Hub City Radio)-

On Monday night, the Aberdeen City Council held a public hearing on a resolution to extend the moratorium on data centers to July of 2027.

Aberdeen City Attorney Ron Wager explains why to extend it to July.

During public testimony, Clark Thares expressed concerns about the lack of transparency involving the Aberdeen Development Corporation.

Thares once again emphasized the need of a task force and recommended who should be on them.

Thares believed the moratorium should go into November of 2027 and criticized the ADC for delaying the process.

Janell Meyer also support the extension of the moratorium.  She believed the council should use that time to work on an ordinance to ban data centers in Aberdeen.

Councilman Rob Ronayne put an amendment in the resolution to not allow new crypto mining facilities in the city.

The council approved the resolution with the amendment included and set the date now for July 1st, 2027.
