Aberdeen Development Corporation to support HB1262

ABERDEEN, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- The Aberdeen Development Corporation has announced they will support HB1262.  The bill make an appropriation for the construction of a non-residential, school-based, therapeutic services facility in Brown County and to declare an emergency.  Prime sponsor of the bill is Representative Lana Greenfield of Doland.

The ADC released the following statement:

“Northeastern South Dakota currently lacks local services for elementary students with severe behavioral and emotional needs. House Bill 1262 would help address this gap by supporting the development of a regional therapeutic education facility in Aberdeen that would serve families across our region.

Similar programs in Sioux Falls and Rapid City are already at capacity, leaving Northeastern South Dakota families with limited options and long waitlists. HB 1262 focuses on Kindergarten through 5th grade, when early intervention can make the greatest long-term impact.

This bill proposes a one-time investment for acquisition, renovation, and equipment only. There is no ongoing state operating subsidy required. The program would operate within existing education funding structures and focus on stabilizing students, providing treatment, and helping them successfully return to their home school districts.”

The bill is expected to have a hearing in front of the House Education Committee on Wednesday morning.
