Aberdeen Fire & Rescue: Weig selected as next chief

ABERDEEN, S.D. (From American News Staff Reports) – Joel Weig will be Aberdeen’s next fire chief, according to a Facebook post by Aberdeen Fire & Rescue.

The city council is expected to make that formal at Monday’s meeting.

But City Manager Joe Gaa has announced Weig, who has been with the department since 1999, is the pick, according to the post. Weig has been a battalion chief since 2017. He has an associates degree in wildlife management from North Dakota State University-Bottineau and an associates degree in finance from Lake Area Technical College in Watertown.

More than 30 people applied for the job.

“When we started evaluating candidates, I quickly noted that we had some very qualified and committed internal candidates. Once the search was narrowed to internal candidates, Joel’s work ethic and calm demeanor were traits that made him a strong contender” Gaa said in the Facebook announcement.

Weig and his wife, Sheri, live in Aberdeen and have a daughter.

After Monday’s council meeting, there will be a short ceremony at the downtown fire station at which time Weig will begin his duties. The council meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at 123 S. Lincoln St. City hall and the fire station are in the same complex.
