ABEREEN, S.D.(Press Release)- Join the Aberdeen University-Civic Symphony under the direction of Dr. Christopher Stanichar on Saturday, February 27th, 2021, at 7:30pm at Jewett Theater on the NSU campus. The orchestra will take you on a trip into the world of fairy tales. The orchestra will be joined by NSU voice faculty member, Darci Bultema, and NSU Concerto-Aria Winners Marissa Hanley (trumpet) and John Litwiller (tenor). Also on the program is Courtney Rott (narrator), a debut film of the Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre and students from the Aberdeen Central High School Orchestra. Tickets are free and open to the public.
The concert is performed in memory to Glenna Fouberg, educator and longtime board member of the Friends of the AUCS. The concert begins with the “Aria” from Bachianas Brasileriasby Villa-Lobos. One of the most haunting and melancholic melodies composed, the music is a blend of J. S. Bach and music of Brazil. Also on the concert isthe Spanish inspired El amor brujo(The Love Witch) by De Falla. This work has impassioned rhythms and melodies that evoke Flamenco music. The concert also features the remarkable talent of the NSU Concerto-Aria winners.
The AUCS will perform Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf with the Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre. Peter and the Wolfis a children’s piece that has instruments that represent each of the different animals/characters in the story. Based in West Liberty(Iowa)Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre has created large colorful puppets to help present this piece of music and help make it accessible to the audience. They also bring a large puppet theatre edifice that sits in front of the orchestra, and the puppeteers narrate the story for the audience. Following the performance, audience members will have the chance to view the puppets up close in the lobby.It is a beloved work that has not been played in Aberdeen in several decades. This concert is sure to appeal to audience members of all ages.
