Alvin Preszler, 91

Alvin Preszler, 91, most recently of Aberdeen, SD, died Monday, March 3, 2025 at the Bethesda Home in Aberdeen.

 

Alvin Edwin Preszler, son of Anna (Himmerich) and Arthur Preszler, was born in McPherson County between Eureka, SD and Hosmer, SD on June 3, 1933. He was brought up on his parent’s farm SE of Hosmer and attended Sangamon TWSHP Rural School. He went on to Hosmer High School, graduating with the Class of 1952. He then worked on the farm. Alvin married Mildred Schumacher at a rural Hosmer Lutheran Church on November 21, 1954. They first lived in Aberdeen for one year where Alvin was employed with Craven Welding. Alvin served his country in the United States Army, being inducted May 17, 1956. Following his honorable discharge on March 5, 1958, he and Mildred purchased a farm four miles east and one mile south of Hosmer. This is where they lived until 2010 when they relocated to Eureka. Alvin was a member of the Eureka United Methodist Church and was a Sunday school teacher and sang in the Church Choir.  Since April 2016, they lived in Aberdeen, where Alvin was a member of Aldersgate Church. He served on the Hosmer School Board for eight years and was the Sangamon TWSHP clerk for many years. He also served on the Edmunds County Conservation Board and was employed by the Agricultural Stabilization Agency (currently Farm Service Agency). Alvin enjoyed fixing things, working on tractors, and playing harmonica.

 

Alvin is survived by one son, Kim (Shirley) Preszler of Hosmer; two daughters—Connie (Neal) Woehlhaff of Eureka and Debra Larson of Aberdeen; one sister, Arvella (Ivan) Schumacher of Hosmer; six grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred, on October 28, 2023; His father, Arthur, on August 10, 1991; his mother, Anna, on March 6, 1987; three brothers—Lester, Raymond, Harvey; one sister, Janice Ruby; and son-in-law, Bob Larson.

 

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 AM, Monday, March 10, 2025 at Aldersgate Church in Aberdeen, led by Pastor Mike Waldrop. Organist will be Julie Ford and Alvin selected “Amazing Grace” and “Children of the Heavenly Father” for the congregation to sing.  Alvin also selected songs for Wes Schaible and Joyce Heyne—“He Touched Me” and “This World is not My Own”. Interment, with military graveside rites by the Adolph Forkel Legion Post No. 189, Hosmer, SD, are scheduled for 1:30 PM Monday at Bethany Cemetery, Hosmer.

Honorary bearers will be the Bethesda Home staff.

Casketbearers will be Chandler Preszler of Roscoe, SD; Shaun Preszler of Sioux Falls, SD; Mason Preszler of Bowdle; Raph Duncan and Matt Barber of Aberdeen; and Corey Kauk of Elk River, MN.

 

Visitation will be from 4:00 – 5:30 PM Sunday at Lien Funeral Home, Bowdle.
