PIERRE, S.D.(KCCR)- The America 250 South Dakota Commission held a meeting Wednesday to start looking at how the state plans to celebrate America’s 250th birthday in 2026. State Historical Society Director Dr. Ben Jones says on the national level officials are considering holding America’s Field Trip.
Jones says he’s talked to officials about adding Mount Rushmore as a tour site and perhaps a look behind the carving at the vault holding copies of the Constitution. Nick Harrington with the Game, Fish and Parks Department says G-F-and-P would like to work with the group for Walk 250 Miles in 1776.
Senator Tim Reed of Brookings wondered if the Walk 250 idea could be localized to cities and towns.
The Commission also gave final approval to a logo. Slight changes needed to be made to the logo to remove possible trademark infringement with the national logo.
