PIERRE, S.D.(DRGNews)- More information is now available regarding the shelter in place order that was given Wednesday morning for Buchanan Elementary and the Oahe Child Development Center in Pierre.
According to the Pierre Police Department, at approximately 7:40am Wednesday, a Patrol Officer observed 29-year-old Ramiro Gonzalez of Springfield on Capitol Avenue, near Lakeview Court. Gonzalez was known to have active arrest warrants out and was also a suspect in a case involving him being in possession of a stolen vehicle in Pierre.
When Gonzalez saw the Officer, he ran into Lakeview Trailer Court. Officers were unable to locate Gonzalez which prompted– as an extra precaution– a shelter-in-place order for Buchanan Elementary and the Oahe Child Development Center.
A perimeter was set up around the Lakeview Trailer Court area and multiple agencies assisted in searching for Gonzalez. Information was obtained that Gonzalez was inside a residence in Lakeview Trailer Court and at approximately 10:20am, Gonzalez was taken into custody without incident. The shelter in place order was then lifted.
Gonzalez was arrested and taken to the Hughes County Jail. He’s being held on the outstanding warrants and is also charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, ingesting a substance to become intoxicated, and ingestion of a controlled drug or substance in Hughes County.
Along with the Pierre Police Department, agencies involved in the search include the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office, Hughes County Emergency Management, South Dakota Highway Patrol, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, US Marshals and the FBI.
