As expected unemployment claims show increase in past week

PIERRE, S.D. (WNAX) – In the past week just over 5,100 new unemployment claims were processed by the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation. That was up over 1,200 from the week before.

Department Secretary Marcia Hultman says they expected that rise.

Hultman says they are seeing some workers being called back by their employers.

Hultman says they expect claim numbers to run high for some time.

The state has had over 41,000 unemployment claims filed since mid-March, with over 23,000 filing for more than one week of benefits.
