Attorney General wants to find areas of cooperation with tribes

PIERRE, S.D. (WNAX) – The State – Tribal Relations Committee of the South Dakota legislature had tribal checkpoints on their meeting agenda today.

Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg says he would rather talk than meet the tribes in court.

The Cheyenne River and Pine Ridge Sioux Tribes have put checkpoints on federal and state highways into their reservations in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus in their population.

Ravnsborg says he wants to find areas of cooperation.

Ravnsborg says he has not talked directly to Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Chairman Harold Frazier.

Committee member, Senator Troy Heinert of Mission suggested developing a set of protocols to be used for consultations with the tribes on the checkpoints and other critical issues.
