Avera leader says hospital wants to be on side of patients

YANKTON, S.D. (WNAX) – Modern medicine has become a triangle of sorts between patients, providers and insurance companies. The patient and providers both depend on the insurance companies to pay for appropriate treatments.

Doug Ekeren, President of Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton says they want to be on the side of their patients.

Ekeren says medical insurance has become very complicated.

Surprise bill has become a big issue when a patient gets billed for a service that is not covered by their insurance.

Ekeren says they try to avoid that as much as possible.

Ekeren says they continue to work with insurance companies to cover as many possibilities as they can.
