Bill to require state seal & motto at public schools pass House Education Committee

PIERRE, S.D.(KCCR)- South Dakota schools may have more required homework for students if a bill continues to move through the South Dakota legislature.  House Bill 1198 would require schools to display the state motto or state seal in public schools.  Prime sponsor, Representative Phil Jenson of Rapid City says there is history with the proposal.

The bill was supported by two groups but opposed by five including Wade Pogany and the Associated School Boards of South Dakota.  He says current standards already require discussion of the motto and seal.

Representative Fred Deutsch of Florence moved do-pass on the bill saying it has value for students.

H-B 1198 passed the House Education Committee 10 to 4 and now moves to the South Dakota House.

The South Dakota State Motto is Under God the people rule.
