WATERTOWN, S.D.(KXLG)- Codington County experienced a chaotic evening on Sunday as severe thunderstorms swept through the region, bringing a tornado, a stranded boat on Lake Kampeska, and widespread flooding and damage, according to a news release from the Codington County Sheriff’s Office.
At approximately 5:58 PM, Codington County Sheriff’s Deputies tracked a tornado as it moved through western rural Codington County. The tornado struck one residence during its path; fortunately, the house was unoccupied at the time of impact, preventing any injuries.
Among the severe weather, reports came in of a boat stranded on Lake Kampeska with eight occupants, including children. Codington County Search and Rescue swiftly responded to the distress call, successfully assisting everyone to safety from the lake.
Vance McDaniels was in the boat.
As someone tried to help, they too, became stranded.
Codington County Search and Rescue secured the children who were on board.
McDaniels said, “It’s a helpless feeling,” and all they could do was pray.
