BROOKINGS, S.D. (KJJQ) – A Brookings man is facing several charges for allegedly selling marijuana out of his business.

35-year-old Zachary Halstead is the owner of Nature’s Paradise at 417 Main Avenue.

Assistant Chief of Police Derrick Powers says police received a call around 3:00 p.m. Thursday that the odor of marijuana was coming from the business.

When police arrived, the owner was gone and the business was locked. Police were able to make contact with him and search warrants were obtained for the business and Halstead’s home.

Powers says they found about a half-pound of marijuana, marijuana wax and drug paraphernalia in the store as well as evidence that pot was being distributed.

He says illegal mushrooms and paraphernalia were found in a search of the home.

Halstead is charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a controlled substance, distribution of marijuana in a drug free zone and possession of drug paraphernalia. The store is located within 1000 feet of the Children’s Museum.

Halstead is free on a $5000 cash bond. A appearance is set for October 21st.

The Nature’s Paradise Facebook page describes it as a health food store selling “herbs and spices, vitamins, herbal supplements…”
