Brookings officials looking at options for school this fall

BROOKINGS, S.D. (KJJQ) – Brookings School officials are trying to figure out what the start of school will look like in August.

Superintendent Klint Willert says they still don’t know. He says CDC guidelines are extremely limiting and that’s something they’ve discussed with legal counsel.

He says they’re also awaiting guidelines from the State Department of Educaiton; those are expected in mid-July.

Willert says there are three options – everyone in school, everyone online or some mix of the two. And there are different possibilities for the hybrid option. It could include both in-person and online instruction.

Willert says many questions remain — including whether or not to require masks.

A survey of Brookings school district staff shows some 45-percent of those responding have concerns about resuming face-to-face instruction in the fall.
